U14s and U16s West Kent Girl’s Finals

On Monday 18th January 2010 and Tuesday 19th January 2010 saw Castlemaine Hall, Gillingham hosted the U14s and U16s West Kent Girls badminton finals. School from all over the West of Kent attended having qualified from their local competition to be at this event.

Schools in the U14s included:

• Dartford Grammar School for Girls (Dartford School Sport Partnership)
• Malling School (Malling and Sevenoaks School Sport Partnership)
• Northfleet School for Girls (Gravesham School Sport Partnership)
• St Simon Stock (Maidstone School Sport Partnership)
• Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls (Tonbridge and West Kent School Sport Partnership)

In the U14s event, St Simon Stock from Maidstone dominated, winning all of their four matches 5 games to 0 not dropping a single game. Their closest rivals were Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls, but in their key encounter with St Simon Stock the final score was 105 – 53 (5-0). Dartford Grammar School for Girls finished third, playing consistently well throughout but found Tonbridge Grammar and St Simon Stock too strong. Both Malling School and Northfleet fought very hard throughout the competition but in the end finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Schools in the U16s event included:

• Aylesford and Malling School (Malling and Sevenoaks School Sport Partnership)
• Dartford Grammar School for Girls (Dartford School Sport Partnership)
• Northfleet School for Girls (Gravesham School Sport Partnership)
• Maidstone Grammar School for Girls (Maidstone School Sport Partnership)
• Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls (Tonbridge and West Kent School Sport Partnership)

In the U16s competition, Tonbridge Grammar were determined to achieve one place better than their U14s girls team from the day before. Their first match against Maidstone Grammar ended up being the deciding match in this five team league with Tonbridge Grammar catching their Maidstone counterparts cold to inflict a 105-50 (5-0) defeat. Tonbridge Grammar then went on to play some excellent badminton in the tournament dropping just one game which was against Dartford Grammar. This left the other schools to fight it out for the remaining places, in the end Maidstone Grammar warmed up to win the rest of their matches with their win against Dartford proving critical to ensure 2nd place. Dartford once again played consistently well and claimed 3rd place, leaving Aylesford and Malling in 4th and Northfleet 5th.

The winning schools from this competition will now go onto to meet the winning school from the East of Kent to produce an the overall Kent Champions, this school will then go onto the BADMINTON England regional competition being held at K2 in Crawley on 25th February 2010.
